From September 2nd to 4th, our Port of Big Creek team came together for a three-day training session that focused on two very important topics: Stowaway Detection and Response and Unauthorized Access to Restricted Areas.
The training brought together staff from across different departments, along with partners from Immigration, Customs, BAHA, BPA, Police, and the Coast Guard. This mix of people created the perfect environment for sharing knowledge and building stronger teamwork.
Learning and Sharing
The sessions blended online learning, classroom discussions, and real-life scenarios. Everyone had the opportunity to delve into ISPS Code requirements, practice response steps, and share ideas on how to further enhance our port’s security.

Day Highlights
-
Focused on spotting and managing stowaways and coordinating with authorities.
-
Centered on preventing and responding to unauthorized access in restricted areas.
-
Wrapped up with joint discussions alongside external agencies, ensuring everyone knows their role in real-life situations.
What really stood out was the active participation — from sharing real experiences to brainstorming improvements.
Moving Forward
The training didn’t just meet its goals — it gave us clear next steps to keep improving, including updates to our SOPs and new guidelines for handling incidents.
Most importantly, it showed that when we learn together, we grow stronger together.
