🍌 Celebrating the Legacy of John Craig Griffith: The Man Behind the Name 🚢
Did you know that our new tugboat, J.C. Griffith, carries the name of a person who played a vital role in the establishment of our company? Today, we'd like to take a moment to honor the remarkable contributions of Mr. John Craig Griffith, a true pioneer in the history of the Big Creek Group.
To truly appreciate Griffith's significance, let's take a step back and delve into the captivating story of our company's origins. In the 80s, the banana farms were owned by the Government of Belize (GOB) and controlled by a government owned entity known as the Banana Control Board. During this time, the GOB had a management contract with a Honduran company, Tela Railroad Company (TRC), a subsidiary of Chiquita International for the management and control of the banana farms.
To facilitate the transportation of Belize’s bananas to Europe, TRC owned a transportation company, Riversdale Services Ltd. (RSL), whose responsibility was to transport the banana from Big Creek to either Honduras or Guatemala via tugs and barges to be loaded unto ships bound to Europe.
However, as time passed, the costs associated with managing the banana industry became increasingly burdensome for the government. Consequently, the management contract with TRC was terminated, leading to a new era of transformation. This is where Mr. John Craig Griffith entered the picture, and was appointed by the government with the task of privatizing the banana industry.
Griffith's strategic vision and leadership paved the way for the start of the privatization process. He initiated the sale of banana farms to private Belizean individuals, marking a significant shift in ownership. While private individuals came to own the banana farms, the government still retained ownership of the Banana Control Board, which underwent privatization and was eventually passed to the Banana Growers Association—a name that remains familiar in our industry to this day. During this period, Griffith served as the Executive Chairman, leaving an indelible mark on the future of the industry.
One of Griffith's remarkable achievements was securing the necessary funding to restore the farms. His close relationship with Fyffes was instrumental in the increased production of quality fruits, paving the way for future success. Griffith played a crucial role in acquiring all the assets previously owned by Tela Railroad Company in Belize. This included acquiring Big Creek and RSL. Shortly after, the establishment of the Port of Big Creek became a reality, further bolstering the company's growth and facilitating efficient trade operations. Riversdale Services Ltd. was also transformed into Banana Enterprises Ltd., reflecting the company's expansion and evolution.
Today, as we stand proud with our new tugboat, J.C. Griffith, we pay tribute to the remarkable contributions of Mr. John Craig Griffith. His unwavering dedication, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment to the banana industry have shaped the trajectory of our company. We owe our current success to the foundation he laid, and we are eternally grateful for his pioneering efforts.
So, the next time you see our tugboat gracefully navigating the waters, remember the man who inspired its name—John Craig Griffith—one of the visionary leaders who played an instrumental role in building the Big Creek Group as we know it today. |

Positive Thought of the Month |
|
Don't change so people will like you; be yourself and the right people will love you.
To find true happiness we must be true to ourselves, live our own dreams, and be proud of what makes us unique instead of feeling the pressure to follow the crowd.
When we are comfortable in our own skin, we are not fighting against or with anyone, as we've discovered our own true nature and are living in accordance with it. We are courageous enough to live our own truth.
The ancient meaning of the word courage is "tell the story of who you are with your whole heart."

Practice mindful eating habits to prevent overeating. Make the dinner table a no-phone zone and try to eat slower.
📵 🍴🍜
In our fast-paced world, it's easy to rush through meals without paying attention to what and how much we're eating. However, practicing mindful eating habits can help prevent overeating and cultivate a healthier relationship with food. One simple but powerful step is to make the dinner table a no-phone zone. By eliminating distractions, we can focus on the flavors, textures, and satisfaction that each bite brings. Additionally, slowing down the pace of eating allows our bodies to register feelings of fullness more accurately, preventing us from overindulging. So, let's savor each meal, be present in the moment, and nourish our bodies with intention and mindfulness. |

One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway-it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all of his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement, he quieted down. |
|
|
|
A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.
As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!
Morale of the Story : Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off, and take a step up. |
