Celebrating Indigenous Peoples Resistance Day in Belize!
October 12th marks Indigenous Peoples Resistance Day, a vibrant celebration of Belize's rich cultural diversity and enduring spirit. Formerly recognized as Columbus Day or Pan-American Day, this day honors the resilience of indigenous peoples and the challenges their ancestors faced throughout history.
Belize, with its unique blend of ethnicities, proudly reflects a cultural tapestry woven from Maya, Mestizo, Garifuna, Creole, and other ancestral roots. The Maya and African heritage embedded in Belizean blood forms the foundation of the nation's identity, making Belize a true melting pot of cultures.

That Caracol is the Largest Mayan Ruin in Belize?
Nestled deep in the Chiquibul Forest, Caracol is the largest known Mayan ruin in Belize, covering an impressive 55 square miles! Once a powerful city-state, Caracol flourished around 1200 BC, with a population that surpassed even that of Tikal, its rival in modern-day Guatemala. The towering Caana ("Sky Palace"), standing at 143 feet, remains the tallest man-made structure in Belize to this day.
Visitors can explore this awe-inspiring archaeological site and discover the rich history of the Maya civilization that once thrived here. Caracol is a true testament to the ingenuity and grandeur of Belize's ancient past!

Caring for your Mental Health
Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, act, make choices, and relate to others. Mental health is more than the absence of a mental illness—it’s essential to your overall health and quality of life. Self-care can play a role in maintaining your mental health and help support your treatment and recovery if you have a mental illness.
October's tip to help you get started is: Getting into Nature 🌳
In the hustle of daily life, it’s easy to forget how powerful nature can be for your mental well-being. Stepping outside, whether it's a walk in the park or a hike in the woods, allows you to reset, recharge, and find peace. Fresh air, greenery, and the sounds of nature have a calming effect that reduces stress, boosts mood, and clears your mind.
At Big Creek Group, we encourage everyone to prioritize self-care—and getting into nature is one of the simplest ways to do that. So take a moment today to reconnect with the outdoors and give your mental health the care it deserves!

Historic Strike Hits East and Gulf Coast Ports
Nearly 50,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) went on strike Tuesday, halting operations at key East and Gulf Coast ports. This strike, the first since 1977, could become one of the most disruptive work stoppages in decades, choking off the flow of imports and exports vital to the U.S. economy.
Businesses that rely on the movement of goods are watching with growing concern, with over 200 business groups sending a letter to the White House, urging intervention. They highlighted the critical role these ports play in sustaining supply chains, and called for swift action to prevent further disruption. Since the pandemic, the industry has seen a surge in shipping rates and profits, with industry profits surpassing $400 billion between 2020 and 2023—more than in the total history of container shipping since 1957.
The wide gap between the union’s demands and the contract offer from the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), which represents major foreign-owned shipping lines and terminal operators, remains unresolved. As negotiations continue, the future of the supply chain hangs in the balance. The maritime sector and companies dependent on port operations, like the Port of Big Creek, are keenly observing the situation, ensuring preventative measures are in place to avoid similar disruptions in Belize.

World Mental Health Day 2024: "Mental Health at Work"
On October 10, 2024, World Mental Health Day will spotlight the critical connection between mental health and the workplace. This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) is partnering with key stakeholders to emphasize how safe and healthy work environments can protect and support mental well-being. At the same time, unhealthy conditions like stigma, discrimination, harassment, and poor working environments can pose significant risks to mental health, affecting quality of life, productivity, and participation at work. With 60% of the global population currently in the workforce, the need for urgent action has never been clearer.
At Big Creek Group, we recognize the importance of prioritizing mental health in the workplace. Creating a supportive, inclusive environment where our employees feel valued and heard is not just a company goal, but a responsibility. We are committed to fostering a culture where mental health is openly discussed and actively protected. By working together with our employees, and learning from those with lived experiences, we aim to prevent risks to mental health and enhance overall well-being.
This World Mental Health Day, Big Creek Group stands with the global movement to advocate for healthier working conditions. We encourage our team and stakeholders to engage in meaningful conversations and take proactive steps to support mental health at work. By investing in evidence-based interventions and promoting mental well-being, we can ensure that every employee has the opportunity to thrive—both on the job and in life.
Let’s take action today for a healthier, happier future at Big Creek Group and beyond!

Tribute 🪦
Remembering Ali Garbutt 🕊️
We dedicate a special section to honor one of our own—Ali Garbutt, a dedicated and hardworking member of the Port of Big Creek. Ali was not just an employee; he was a friend, a brother to many, and a valued part of our community. His positive energy, hard work, and camaraderie left an indelible mark on us all.
We shared countless good times together, from moments of laughter to the challenges we overcame as a team. Ali was loved by so many and will be deeply missed. He took great pride in his work at the Port and always looked forward to returning to contribute to the success of our operations.
It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Ali, but we know this is not the end. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife Tanisha, his seven children, and the entire Garbutt family during this difficult time. Ali’s legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone here at the Port of Big Creek.
Until we meet again, Ali—rest in peace.

STORY TIME - The Wise Owl
Once there was an old owl living in an oak and she was seeing every day many things that were happening around her.
One day, the owl saw a boy helping an old man to carry a heavy basket.
The other day, the owl saw how a little girl screamed at her mother. Every day the old owl saw many things, but each time kept silent about what she saw.
Over time, the owl starts to talk less and less, but this made her hear better.
Now the owl could hear what the people were saying, when they were passing by the trees. One day, she heard a woman telling another person how she saw an elephant jumping over her fence.
In the other day, the owl heard how a young man boast himself to someone else, that he was perfect and never made a mistake in his life.
With every passing day, the old owl spoke fewer and heard more. Slowly she became more and more wise and it became known as the wise owl.
Moral of the Story:
When you speak less, you begin to notice and listen more so you will become wiser and smarter.
