🌟Unleashing the Heroic Spirit |
|
|
|
|
When we hear the word "heroic," our minds often jump to cinematic feats—capes, soaring music, and world-saving moments. But at Big Creek Group, we believe the truest form of the Heroic Spirit isn't about being superhuman; it’s about being super-human.
It is the quiet, persistent courage to show up, do what is right, and lift others up when it matters most. This month, we are celebrating that spark within every member of our team. |
|
In the Workplace: The Heroism of Reliability Across the various divisions of Big Creek Group, heroism doesn't usually look like a rescue mission. It looks like integrity and ownership.
- The Courage to Speak Up: Having the "Heroic Spirit" means being the person who points out a safety concern or a potential issue before it becomes a crisis.
- The Strength of Support: It’s being the teammate who notices a colleague is overwhelmed and offers a hand without being asked.
- The Power of Resilience: When a project hits a wall, the heroic employee doesn't look for excuses; they look for a way through, keeping our operations moving forward.
Key Takeaway: You are a hero every time you choose excellence over "good enough" and prioritize the safety and success of the entire Big Creek family. |
|
At Home: The Heroism of Presence The same spirit that drives professional success at Big Creek is what builds a thriving home life. Often, the most heroic thing we can do for our families is to simply be present.
- The Shield of Patience: After a long day on the job, choosing to respond with kindness instead of frustration is a heroic act of emotional intelligence.
- The Gift of Time: Putting down the phone to engage in a child’s story or a partner’s day creates a "safe harbor" that is vital for our loved ones.
- Leading by Example: By showing your family that you value hard work and empathy—values we strive for every day—you are crafting a legacy that outlasts any shift.
Finding the Balance The Heroic Spirit isn't about burning out; it’s about burning bright. To be a hero for your team and your family, you must also be a hero for yourself. This means setting boundaries, resting when needed, and acknowledging that your contribution—no matter how small it feels—is a vital piece of the larger Big Creek Group puzzle.
Thank you for the dedication you bring to our company and for the light you carry home every night. |

The Port of Big Creek is making maritime history!
We are proud to spotlight the incredible expertise guiding the massive vessels that enter our waters. The Port of Big Creek now boasts three talented International Pilots, including a record-breaker and a legendary family duo.
Meet the Team at the Helm: - Mr. Darren Levy: At 31 years old, Mr. Levy officially holds the title of Belize’s youngest licensed International Pilot. His achievement is a testament to the world-class talent emerging right here at Big Creek.
- A Family Legacy: We are also home to a unique maritime tradition with Mr. Elvis Lennarez and his son, Elvis Jr. Both serve as International Pilots, bringing a wealth of shared experience and "generational" knowledge to our marine operations.
|
|
What is an International Pilot?
It’s one of the most demanding jobs in the industry. These pilots board foreign ships and take command of the navigation to ensure every vessel—no matter how large—maneuvers safely through our channels and docks with precision.
By combining the seasoned expertise of the Lennarez family with the record-breaking drive of Mr. Levy, the Port of Big Creek is ensuring that our maritime future is in the safest possible hands. |

🌱Latest in Agriculture News: A New Era for Agro-Processing in Belize
We are excited to share a major milestone for our local agricultural sector! On February 9, 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries officially partnered with the Government of Taiwan to launch the Agricultural Product Processing Innovation and Incubation Project. This ambitious four-year initiative, valued at US $4.2 million, is designed to transform how we approach farming by shifting the focus toward value-added production. What does this mean for our industry? - A New Hub for Innovation: The project will establish a dedicated food processing and incubation center to help Belizean producers transition from raw harvesting to professional product development.
- Technological Upgrades: Farmers and entrepreneurs will gain access to advanced processing technologies, helping to improve the shelf life and quality of local goods.
- Support for Entrepreneurs: The project includes specialized training and guidance for new agricultural entrepreneurs, bridging the gap between the field and the marketplace.
- Economic Growth: By strengthening the connection between production and sales, the initiative aims to improve the livelihoods of farmers and ensure Belizean products are more competitive both locally and internationally.
Minister Rodwell Ferguson and Ambassador Lily Hsu of Taiwan signed the implementation plan, highlighting a shared commitment to long-term food security and sustainable growth. This partnership leverages Taiwan’s extensive expertise in agro-processing to empower our local farming communities. As this project unfolds over the next four years (2026–2030), we look forward to seeing the innovative products that our talented Belizean producers will bring to the table! |

🚣‍♂️What's Happening this Month: La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge
Get ready for the splash! This March, one of Belize’s most iconic sporting traditions returns to the water. The La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge is a grueling, four-day canoe race that brings together professional paddlers and amateur enthusiasts from across the globe to navigate 175 miles of Belize’s historic waterways. 🛶
Whether you are a seasoned "paddler-watcher" or a first-time spectator, this event is a must-see. Here is the 2026 itinerary so you can plan where to cheer:
- Day 1 (Wednesday, March 4th): The race kicks off at the historic Hawksworth Bridge in San Ignacio Town. Be there early to catch the high-energy "bang" of the start as dozens of canoes hit the Macal River at once.
- Day 2 (Thursday, March 5th): The journey continues from Banana Bank, as teams push through the winding river towards the central plains.
- Day 3 (Friday, March 6th): The race picks up speed from Double Head Cabbage, heading toward the riverside village of Burrell Boom.
- Day 4 (Saturday, March 7th): The grand finale! Paddlers depart from Burrell Boom for the final stretch, ending with a triumphant finish at the Belcan Bridge in Belize City.
Why Attend? Originally started in 1998, the race has grown from a commercial promotion into a powerful celebration of environmental conservation and the history of the "Old River." Along each stop, you’ll find a festival-like atmosphere with local food, live music, and games for the whole family.
Pro-Tip for Spectators: The best way to experience the race is to follow by road! Pack a cooler with water (and maybe a few Belikins), bring your sunscreen and a hat, and find a spot at the riverbank to cheer on the teams as they power through this incredible test of endurance.

"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself." — Joseph Campbell
As we celebrate National Heroes and Benefactors Day this March, Joseph Campbell’s words remind us that heroism isn’t always about grand, cinematic gestures. Often, it is found in the quiet, consistent dedication to a cause, a community, or a neighbor.
Whether it was Baron Bliss entrusting his legacy to a country he admired from afar, or the local farmers working tirelessly to build a sustainable future for Belize, a hero is defined by their vision beyond the "I." When we contribute our time to a local project, mentor a young entrepreneur, or simply advocate for the growth of our industry, we are contributing to something "bigger." We are building the Belize of tomorrow.
This Month’s Reflection: What is one small way you can contribute to something bigger than yourself this week? It could be as simple as sharing your knowledge with a peer or volunteering an hour of your time.
Let’s honor our national heroes by carrying their spirit of service into our daily lives. |

🇧🇿 National Holiday - Honoring Our Legacy on March 9th |
|
|
|
|
On Monday, March 9th, Belize pauses to observe National Heroes and Benefactors Day. While many of us still affectionately refer to it as "Baron Bliss Day," this holiday has evolved into a broader tribute to the visionaries, leaders, and philanthropists who shaped the identity of our nation.
The Legend of Baron Bliss The holiday originated to honor Henry Edward Ernest Victor Bliss, a British-born traveler who fell in love with Belize without ever setting foot on the mainland. Paralyzed and confined to his yacht, the Sea King II, the Baron spent his final months anchored in our harbor, captivated by the hospitality of the local fishermen and the beauty of the coastline. Upon his death on March 9, 1926, he left a staggering bequest of nearly $2 million BZ (a fortune at the time) to a trust for the people of Belize. His generosity funded landmarks we still use today, including:
- The Bliss Center for the Performing Arts
- The Bliss School of Nursing
- The Baron Bliss Lighthouse & Park
- The annual Harbor Regatta
Beyond the Baron: Our National Heroes In 2008, the holiday was renamed to officially recognize other titans of Belizean history. On this day, we also honor: - George Cadle Price: The "Father of the Nation" and our first Prime Minister.
- Philip Goldson: A fierce advocate for democracy, press freedom, and social justice.
- Gwendolyn Lizarraga: A pioneer for women’s rights and the first female government minister.
- Thomas Vincent Ramos: A champion of Garifuna culture and civil rights.
How We Celebrate The weekend is typically filled with vibrant traditions that bring the community together:
- The Harbor Regatta: Per the Baron’s specific wishes in his will, sailboat races fill the Belize City harbor with color and competition.
- Wreath-Laying Ceremony: A formal tribute at the Baron Bliss tomb near the lighthouse.
- Kite Festivals: Families gather at parks across the country to fill the March skies with hand-crafted kites.
- La Ruta Maya: This grueling 180-mile canoe challenge often culminates during this holiday weekend, symbolizing the endurance and spirit of the Belizean people.
"A nation that does not honor its heroes will not long endure." > As we enjoy the long weekend, let’s take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices and generosity that built the foundations of our home. |

💆‍♀️March's Wellness Tip: Give Your Skin the Love It Deserves |
|
|
|
|
As we move into the sunnier days of March, it’s the perfect time to refocus on the foundation of your self-care: your skin. Your skin is your body’s largest organ and its first line of defense, so treating it well is about more than just vanity—it’s about overall health.
Building a daily skincare routine can help you maintain long-term skin health or target specific concerns like acne, scarring, or dark spots. If you aren't sure where to start, keep it simple! A solid routine only needs four key players:
- Cleanser: To wash away the day’s impurities and sweat.
- Serum: To deliver concentrated nutrients or treat specific concerns.
- Moisturizer: To lock in hydration and keep your skin barrier strong.
- Sunscreen: Your most important shield! Especially with the Belizean sun getting stronger this month, never skip your SPF.
|
|
The Golden Rule: Consistency is key. Your skin thrives on routine, so find products that work for you and stick with them. Whether you're spending the day in the office or out on the river for La Ruta Maya, make sure you're giving your skin the protection and nourishment it needs. |

🌊 Bridging Contents: CARICOM Strengthens Ties with Sweden, Norway, and Austria
In a significant move for regional diplomacy, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) recently strengthened its ties with three major European nations. On February 11, 2026, Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett officially accepted the Letters of Credence from new ambassadors representing Sweden, Norway, and Austria. While these diplomatic ceremonies often take place in high-level offices in Guyana, the ripples of these agreements travel all the way to our docks here at the Port of Big Creek. What was discussed? The discussions focused on three pillars that are critical to the future of maritime trade: - Ocean Governance & Water Management: A commitment to protecting our "blue economy."
- Climate Resilience: Technical support for energy systems and disaster management.
- Multilateralism & Security: Enhancing organized crime prevention and regional stability.
|
|
🚢 What This Means for the Port of Big Creek You might ask, “How does a new ambassador from Sweden or Norway affect our daily operations?” The answer lies in the future of how we move goods and protect our coast.
1. Green Port Initiatives Sweden and Austria are global leaders in renewable energy.
2. Strengthening the "Maritime Nation" Identity Norway and the Caribbean share a unique identity as maritime-focused regions.
3. Expansion of Trade Horizons Ambassador Maria Velasco (Sweden) noted that CARICOM and the EU together represent 41 states. As these diplomatic bridges strengthen, we pave the way for smoother trade routes and potential new markets for Belizean exports, such as the bananas and sugar that flow through our gates every day.
4. Enhanced Security and Technology With a shared focus on fighting organized crime and improving "ocean governance," we can expect continued advancements in maritime security technology.
The Bottom Line As Belize continues to act as a "vital bridge" between CARICOM and Central America, the Port of Big Creek stands at the forefront of this growth. By staying informed on these global partnerships, we remain ready to seize the opportunities that come with a more connected and resilient Caribbean.
Stay steady, stay safe, and let’s keep moving Belize forward! 🌊🚢 #PortOfBigCreek #ThePortHub #CARICOM #MaritimeNews #BelizeTrade #GreenShipping |

At Big Creek Group, we encourage employees to regularly review and adjust their budgets to reflect current needs and priorities. “A clear plan gives you greater control over your financial future.” |

đź‘©Interesting Holidays Around the World: International Women's Day March 8 |
|
|
|
|
More Than Just a Date: A Global Movement
While many of us see International Women’s Day (IWD) as a day for flowers and appreciation, its roots are far more industrial. The first "National Woman's Day" was observed in 1909 in New York, organized by garment workers protesting against harsh working conditions. Today, it is a global holiday celebrated from the streets of Rome to the shores of Belize, dedicated to honoring the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
âš“ Women in the "Blue Economy"
We want to take a moment to look at this holiday through a maritime lens. Historically, the shipping and logistics industry was seen as a male-dominated frontier. However, that tide has turned.
From the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to our very own operations at the Port of Big Creek, women are steering the industry forward. Whether it’s in logistics coordination, administrative leadership, or on-the-ground operations, the "Blue Economy" thrives because of the diverse perspectives and dedication of women.
Did you know? The UN theme for IWD often focuses on "DigitALL" or "Inclusion." This year, the focus remains on ensuring that women have equal access to training in the fast-evolving tech and engineering sectors of maritime trade. |
|
Celebrate With Us! This March 8, we encourage everyone at Big Creek to:
- Acknowledge a Colleague: Take a moment to thank the women in your department who keep our gears turning.
- Support Local: Buy a gift or treat from a woman-owned business in Independence or Mango Creek.
- Share a Story: If there is a woman in maritime who inspires you, let us know—we’d love to feature her in a future "BCG Newsletter" spotlight!
Happy International Women’s Day to all the incredible women who make our Port a powerhouse! 🚢💪✨ |

🦷Healthy Holidays of the Month: National Dentist's Day March 6 |
|
|
|
|
Keep Your Smile as Bright as the Caribbean Sun!
On March 6, we celebrate National Dentist’s Day. While a trip to the dentist might not be everyone’s favorite "holiday" activity, it is one of the most important dates on your calendar for long-term health.
At the Big Creek Group, our most valuable asset is our people. Just as we perform preventative maintenance on our cranes, tugs, and trucks to keep operations running smoothly, your body needs "preventative maintenance" too—starting with your smile!
Why Dental Health Matters at Work It’s not just about a white smile; oral health is a window into your overall well-being. Poor dental hygiene has been linked to: - Heart Disease: Bacteria from gum inflammation can enter the bloodstream.
- Diabetes: Gum disease can make it harder for the body to control blood sugar.
- Focus & Safety: Chronic tooth pain is a major distraction. Staying sharp on the job—especially in a port environment—requires being pain-free and healthy.
The "Big Creek" Dental Checklist To mark this National Dentist’s Day, we are encouraging every member of the team to take these three steps:
- Schedule That Check-up: If it’s been more than six months since your last cleaning, call your local dentist in Independence or Mango Creek today. Early detection of a cavity is a lot easier (and cheaper!) than a root canal later.
- The 2x2 Rule: Brush for two minutes, twice a day. Don't forget to floss—it reaches the 35% of tooth surfaces that your brush misses!
- Hydrate with Water: Working out on the docks or in the fields can be thirsty work. Reach for water instead of sugary sodas or energy drinks, which can erode enamel and lead to decay.
|
|
A Shout-Out to Our Local Dentists We want to extend a huge "Thank You" to the dental professionals in our community who keep our workforce healthy and smiling. Their work ensures that the Big Creek Group stays strong, one tooth at a time.
Challenge: Take a "Healthy Smile" selfie at your next appointment and share it with your department head to show your commitment to wellness!
Let’s keep those smiles healthy and our spirits high! 🪥✨ |

In Loving Memory: Honoring Those We Have Lost |
|
|
|
|
As we move through the early months of 2026, we pause to reflect on the lives of those within our Big Creek Group family who are no longer with us. Whether they were the hands that secured our grounds, the heart of our fleet, or the beloved parents of our colleagues, their absence is deeply felt. This month, we dedicate our Tribute Column to their memory.
Honoring Our Colleagues
Lino Montes We remember Lino Montes, a dedicated stevedore who passed away in late January. Lino was a vital part of the frontline operations that keep our port moving. His hard work and presence on the docks will be greatly missed by his crew and the entire maritime team.
Dean Lozano We honor the memory of Dean Lozano, a former member of our security team. Dean played a crucial role in ensuring the safety and integrity of our operations. We are grateful for his years of service and the vigilance he brought to his post.
Nasar Reyes We also remember Nasar Reyes, a former crew member of our tug fleet. Nasar was a valued member of our maritime operations, serving as a sailor and a cook. He kept our crews fed and our vessels moving; his versatile spirit and dedication to his teammates will not be forgotten. |
|
Extending Our Deepest Sympathies
We also stand with our colleagues who have recently lost their anchors and foundations—their parents.
Ms. Melda Garbutt Our hearts go out to Jarreth Garbutt, our Reefer Technician, following the loss of his mother, Ms. Melda Garbutt. The loss of a mother is a profound weight to carry, and we offer our full support to Jarreth and his family.
Mr. Roberto Jayme Sr. We extend our sincerest condolences to Nelson Jayme, our Shipping Clerk, on the recent passing of his father, Mr. Roberto Jayme Sr. We wish Nelson and his loved ones strength and peace as they navigate this difficult time of mourning.
Mr. Julian Bol Our thoughts are with Herman Cal following the passing of his uncle, Mr. Julian Bol. We extend our deepest sympathies to Herman and the entire family during their time of mourning.
"The bonds we form in our workplace and our community are what make us strong. When one of us hurts, we all feel the loss. Let us continue to support one another and keep the families of the departed in our thoughts and prayers."
To the families, friends, and coworkers of those we have lost: please accept our sincerest condolences. May they rest in peace. |

STORY TIME - The Elephant Rope |
|
|
|
|
As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were. |
|
Moral of the Story: Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?
Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in life. |
|
Farewell to our valued employees as they pursue new opportunities and wishing them all the best in their future endeavors. |
