🌟 New Year, Better Me!
A new year brings a fresh start—and a great opportunity to focus on becoming the best version of ourselves. The idea of “New Year, Better Me” isn’t about making drastic changes overnight; it’s about making small, meaningful improvements that positively impact both our professional and personal lives.

In the workplace, self-improvement can take many forms. It might mean sharpening existing skills, learning something new, improving communication with colleagues, or managing time more effectively. Even simple habits—like being more organized, proactive, or open to feedback—can lead to increased productivity, reduced stress, and a more positive work environment. When we grow individually, we contribute more effectively as a team.
Equally important is personal growth outside of work. Taking care of your physical and mental well-being, setting healthy boundaries, prioritizing rest, and making time for family, hobbies, and personal goals all play a crucial role in overall happiness. When we invest in ourselves personally, we bring more energy, focus, and balance into our professional lives.

The connection is simple: a healthier, more fulfilled individual is better equipped to handle challenges, adapt to change, and maintain a positive outlook. By working on ourselves both at work and at home, we create a ripple effect that improves not only our own quality of life, but also the lives of those around us.
As we move into the new year, take a moment to reflect. What’s one habit you can improve? One goal you can set? One change—big or small—you can make toward a better you? Remember, progress is built step by step. Here’s to a year of growth, balance, and becoming a Better Me.
🌮 Did you know?
You Can Own a Stake in Belize’s Energy Future

The Opportunity: Did you know that Hydro Belize Limited (formerly Fortis Belize Limited) is currently offering shares to the Belizean public? Following the Government of Belize’s acquisition of the company on October 31, 2025, a divestment program was launched to ensure Belizean individuals and investors have the opportunity to own these critical national assets.

What You Are Buying Into: Hydro Belize owns and operates three major hydroelectric power plants on the Macal River in the Cayo District: Mollejon, Chalillo, and Vaca.

  • Capacity: Combined capacity of 51 megawatts.
  • Impact: These plants provide approximately one-third of the annual power supplied by BEL to consumers.
  • Performance: In 2024 alone, these facilities generated gross annual revenues of approximately BZ$50 million and hold long-term supply agreements with BEL.

The Details:

  • Shares Available: 4 million shares (50% of current outstanding shares).
  • Price: BZ$29.00 per share.
  • Safety & Transparency: The sale is regulated by the Securities Industry Act of 2021, meaning a full prospectus with operations, risks, and financial projections is available for review.

⏳ Deadline Alert! The share sale is currently open but closes soon on January 20, 2026.

  • How to Apply: Visit www.hydrobelize.com or any major branch of Atlantic Bank Limited (the Paying Agent).
  • Payment Window: Subscribers have until February 4, 2026, to complete payment.
The Bigger Picture: The Government anticipates recouping roughly $116 million from this sale. Additionally, there is optimism that the Social Security Board (SSB)—representing 190,000 Belizean workers and pensioners—will become a major investor in the remaining 50% shareholding retained by the Government.
🌱Latest in Agriculture News: Sugar Industry Secures Stability with New Agreement Addendum

In a key development for Belize’s northern sugar industry, the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) and Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI) have signed an addendum to their 2024 Commercial Agreement, extending it for another year to cover the upcoming 2026 sugar crop season.
This extension, finalized on January 7, 2026, comes at a crucial time as the industry faces significant challenges, including climate-related pressures and the spread of Fusarium disease, both of which have severely reduced cane supplies and raised concerns about long-term viability.
The renewed agreement ensures continuity and stability for producers and the milling operations as preparations continue for the new crop season, expected to begin later this month. Both BSCFA and BSI emphasized their commitment to working collaboratively to support a successful season. They also noted that potential revisions to the Commercial Agreement—originally signed in 2024 after extended negotiations—will be considered in light of recommendations from the Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the industry’s structural issues.
This addendum acts as a bridge that gives stakeholders time to address ongoing challenges while keeping production on track. For many farmers and workers in the sugar belt, this represents hope and a smoother path into the 2026 crop year.

🌻Positive Thought of the Month
“In no direction that we turn do we find ease or comfort. If we are honest and if we have the will to win we find only danger, hard work and iron resolution.”
— Wendell Willkie
Wendell Willkie’s words remind us that meaningful progress is rarely found in comfort or ease. Growth—whether personal or professional—often requires us to face challenges head-on, put in consistent hard work, and remain committed even when the path feels uncertain.

The quote speaks to honesty with ourselves. When we truly want to succeed, we must acknowledge that obstacles and discomfort are part of the journey. These moments test our determination, but they also build resilience, strength, and character. It is through perseverance and “iron resolution” that we move forward, even when conditions are not ideal.

As we go through this month, let this thought encourage you to stay focused and committed, especially when tasks feel demanding or progress feels slow. Challenges are not signs to stop—they are opportunities to prove our dedication and capability. By embracing hard work and standing firm in our resolve, we continue to grow stronger and move closer to our goals.

Let this be a reminder: true success is not found in easy paths, but in the courage to press on despite the difficulties.🌟
🇧🇿 National Holiday - George Price Day
     January 15
On January 15, Belize honors the legacy of The Right Honourable George Cadle Price, the nation’s Father of Independence, on George Price Day. This national holiday is a time to reflect on the life and leadership of a man whose vision, determination, and unwavering commitment helped shape Belize into the sovereign nation it is today.

George Price dedicated his life to public service, championing self-governance, unity, and social justice. Through decades of political leadership, he guided Belize along the path to independence, achieved in 1981, always emphasizing peace, diplomacy, and national pride. His belief in the potential of the Belizean people remains a cornerstone of the country’s identity.

George Price Day is more than a remembrance—it is an opportunity to recommit ourselves to the values he stood for: integrity, perseverance, and service to country. As we observe this day, let us draw inspiration from his legacy by contributing positively to our communities, workplaces, and nation as a whole.

May this occasion remind us that the future of Belize is built on the dedication and responsibility of its people, just as George Price envisioned.

💆‍♀️January's Wellness Tip: Schedule Your Appointments
As we begin a new year, January is the perfect time to put your health at the top of your priority list. One of the simplest yet most effective ways to do this is by scheduling your health appointments and staying consistent with them throughout the year.

Regular preventive care plays a major role in maintaining overall well-being. Visit your dentist at least twice a year, ensure you complete your annual medical checkups, and schedule any recommended health screenings based on your age and individual needs. These routine visits help detect potential issues early, making treatment more effective and reducing long-term health risks.
For employees of Big Creek Group, taking care of your health not only benefits you personally but also supports a safer, more productive workplace. When we feel our best physically and mentally, we are better equipped to perform our duties, support our teams, and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Make it a goal this January to mark those appointments on your calendar and keep them. Your health is your most valuable asset—investing time in preventive care today leads to a stronger, healthier you tomorrow.

🌊 Caribbean Sprinter Incident: Safety and Response on Belize Waters
In mid-December, a Caribbean Sprinter water taxi experienced an unexpected grounding near Caye Chapel, jolting passengers and prompting a swift safety response.
The vessel, which was en route on its scheduled run, ran aground on mangroves in the area. Thanks to the company’s immediate response and adherence to safety procedures, all aboard were attended to quickly. While most passengers were fine, one woman with a sore hand was taken to the hospital for evaluation, and no major injuries were reported.
Caribbean Sprinter representatives noted that the captain was new to the role and that a possible steering issue contributed to the incident. In response, operations have continued as normal while the company reviews its procedures to help prevent similar situations in the future.
This event highlights the importance of maritime safety and preparedness for the busy waterway traffic that supports both commuter travel and tourism in Belize. It also underscores the readiness of emergency teams and transport operators to act promptly when unexpected challenges occur at sea.
Stay tuned to The Port Hub for more updates on port activity, vessel operations, and maritime safety in Belize’s waters.
🦺January's Safety Tip: Prioritize PPE
At Big Creek Group, safety remains a top priority, and one of the most effective ways to prevent workplace injuries is the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). PPE is the first line of defense against hazards commonly encountered in port, industrial, and field operations.

Employees should always ensure they are equipped with the correct safety gear for their tasks—such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility vests, and steel-toed boots. Just as important is understanding when and why each piece of PPE is required. Wearing the right equipment at the right time significantly reduces the risk of injury and protects both the individual and those working nearby.
Regular reminders, proper training, and consistent enforcement of PPE use help build strong safety habits across all Big Creek Group operations. Taking a few moments to put on PPE before starting a task can make the difference between a safe workday and a preventable accident.

Let’s continue to look out for one another by making PPE a non-negotiable part of our daily routine. A safer workplace starts with each of us doing our part.
😇Interesting Holidays Around the World: Hot Sauce Day
January 22
Spice lovers around the world celebrate Hot Sauce Day on January 22, a fun and flavorful holiday dedicated to the sauces that add heat, character, and excitement to our meals. From mild and tangy to fiery hot, hot sauce has become a staple in kitchens across cultures—and Belize is no exception.

Here at home, we are proud of our world-renowned local sauce makers, especially Marie Sharp’s, whose products have put Belize on the global culinary map. Made from fresh, locally grown peppers, these sauces showcase not only bold flavor but also Belizean quality and craftsmanship. Many of us don’t need much encouragement to celebrate this holiday—after all, hot sauce is already a daily essential for most staff, finding its way onto lunches, snacks, and just about everything in between.

Hot Sauce Day is a lighthearted reminder of how food connects us, sparks conversation, and reflects our culture. Whether you prefer just a dash or an extra splash, January 22 is the perfect excuse to enjoy your favorite sauce and maybe even try a new one.

So, on this spicy day, grab your bottle of Marie Sharp’s (or your sauce of choice), turn up the heat, and celebrate the flavor that keeps our meals—and our taste buds—alive. 🌶️
🌎Strange Holiday - Opposite Day
January 25
January 25 marks Opposite Day, a quirky and lighthearted holiday where everything is… well, the opposite of what it seems! On this day, “yes” can mean “no,” “up” can be “down,” and routines can be flipped just for fun.

While Opposite Day is mostly about humor, it also offers a playful reminder to see things from a different perspective. Taking a moment to look at situations through the opposite lens can spark creativity, encourage problem-solving, and even improve teamwork. Sometimes, the best ideas come from challenging the usual way of thinking.

In the workplace, Opposite Day can be a fun excuse to mix things up—try a new approach, appreciate a different point of view, or simply share a laugh with coworkers. A positive work environment thrives not only on productivity, but also on moments of enjoyment and connection.

So on January 25, feel free to smile a little wider, think a little differently, and enjoy the fun of doing things the opposite way—at least for the day!
Fitness:  A Fresh Start for the New Year
The beginning of a new year is the perfect opportunity for a fresh start, especially when it comes to your health and fitness. After the busy holiday season, January is a great time to reset, refocus, and take positive steps toward a healthier lifestyle.

Fitness doesn’t have to mean intense workouts or drastic changes. It can start small and still make a big difference. Signing up for a gym is one option, but simple activities like daily walks, light jogs, or short trots before or after work can significantly improve cardiovascular health, boost energy levels, and reduce stress.

There are many other ways to build fitness into your routine:

  • Stretching or mobility exercises to improve flexibility and reduce muscle tension
  • Bodyweight workouts at home, such as squats, push-ups, or planks
  • Sports or recreational activities like football, cycling, or swimming
  • Taking the stairs and staying active during breaks instead of sitting for long periods
  • Short workout sessions (10–20 minutes) that fit easily into a busy schedule

The key is consistency. Choosing activities you enjoy makes it easier to stay committed and turn fitness into a long-term habit rather than a short-lived resolution.

As we start the year, let this be a reminder to take your health seriously. A fitter body supports a sharper mind, better mood, and improved overall quality of life. Small steps taken today can lead to big health gains tomorrow—so start where you are and keep moving forward.
