🌱 Strengthening Belize’s Agriculture: Climate Resilience in the Sugarcane Industry 🌱
Exciting news for Belize’s agriculture sector! The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), in partnership with the Government of Belize, has officially launched the Building the Adaptive Capacity of Sugarcane Farmers in Northern Belize (BAC-SuF) project—a BZD$77 million investment dedicated to building climate resilience in the sugarcane industry.
This first-of-its-kind initiative will provide sugarcane farmers with climate-smart solutions to combat the effects of climate change, such as droughts and unpredictable weather patterns, which have significantly impacted crop yields and farmers’ livelihoods.
🔹 Why This Matters for Agriculture & BEL-AGRO
At BEL-AGRO, we understand the importance of sustainable agriculture and climate resilience in ensuring the future of Belize’s farming industries. With climate challenges affecting all areas of agriculture—from sugarcane to bananas and beyond—innovative solutions, improved farming techniques, and investment in sustainable practices are key to long-term success.
This project will focus on:
✅ Climate-Adapted Sugarcane & Improved Agronomy – Developing nurseries for climate-resilient sugarcane varieties, replanting 10,000 acres, and enhancing soil health and ratoon management.
✅ Sustainable Water & Land Management – Implementing drainage, irrigation, and pest management systems following Climate Smart Agriculture practices.
✅ Knowledge Hub & Capacity Building – Creating a center for training and information sharing to equip farmers with better techniques and resources.
🌍 A Brighter Future for Farmers & Communities
This five-year project is expected to directly benefit over 5,000 sugarcane farmers and impact around 87,000 individuals in their communities. As climate change continues to challenge the agricultural sector, initiatives like this are crucial in ensuring that farmers have the knowledge, tools, and support to thrive.
At BEL-AGRO, we are proud to stand alongside Belize’s farmers in the journey toward sustainability, innovation, and resilience in agriculture. Let’s support our local farmers and celebrate this historic step in securing the future of Belize’s sugarcane industry!

🚢 Maritime Industry Welcomes EU's Clean Industrial Deal, Calls for Enhanced Green Fuel Production 🚢
On February 26, 2025, the European Commission unveiled the Clean Industrial Deal, aiming to harmonize climate action with industrial competitiveness by supporting renewable energy sources. This initiative addresses challenges such as the climate crisis, competitiveness concerns, and economic resilience.
The European Community Shipowners' Association (ECSA) praised the inclusion of shipping as a priority sector in the Deal. ECSA's Secretary General, Sotiris Raptis, emphasized the importance of immediate investments in clean technologies and fuels to maintain the industry's global competitiveness and enhance continental security. He urged EU member states to allocate €9 billion from the shipping Emissions Trading System (ETS) revenues to support clean fuel production and called on the Commission to reduce bureaucratic hurdles to ensure a level playing field.
|
|
|
|
ECSA also highlighted the necessity of targeted investments in the production, distribution, and adoption of sustainable maritime fuels through the forthcoming Sustainable Transport Investment Plan. Such measures are deemed essential to achieve decarbonization goals while preserving the competitiveness of European shipping.
Additionally, ECSA underscored the need to implement the Commission's commitment to reducing the reporting burden by at least 25% for all companies and 35% for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), recognizing the pivotal role SMEs play in European shipping.
The Clean Industrial Deal represents a significant step towards integrating environmental sustainability with industrial growth. However, the maritime industry emphasizes that scaling up green fuel production is crucial for the successful decarbonization of the sector. 🚢⚓️
